Parkinson's disease takes a back seat to Anne and Mike Mikkelsen living life to the fullest, even decades following Mike's diagnosis. The couple likes to say that Parkinson's is always along for the ride, but is relegated to the back seat, particularly when it's their beloved restored 1941 Dodge Luxury Liner Convertible.
On July 10, a 2,000 mile roundtrip quest will fulfill Eduard Alden ?Mike? Mikkelsen?s lifelong dream to showcase The Dodge in a homecoming of sorts. The destination is Big Sky Country, where the couple will hold readings and signings of their new memoir,"The Dodge: Guts, Glory, and Living at Full Throttle," at public libraries and bookstores, timed with the Lewistown Art Center?s historic downtown Art Stomp and Bozeman?s monthly Art Walk.
The couple will reach out to Parkinson?s communities along the way. An award-winning potter and sculptor and lifelong auto collector and restoration enthusiast, Mike also happens to be an alum of MSU, class of 1958. Anne Cutter Mikkelsen, a French trained chef, Master Gardener, former restaurateur, and carepartner to Mike, has packed her pepper grinder and fresh lemons, which accompany her almost everywhere.
Visitors, family, and friends from both coasts are expected at the events and reunions along the route. The Dodge Road Show offers a route map and other details for their trip.
For Mike, the deep connection with the Dodge has forged a lifeline over the decades of her restoration since he discovered her at age 17. The Dodge has deep roots in Lewistown, Montana, where Mike drove her after spotting her in a garage in Connecticut. When Mike went off to war, she was abandoned for twenty years, then impossibly resurrected to her original glory.
Anne will be driving, anticipating some coaching by her husband on the nuances of the Dodge?s three-on-three transmission, even though she?s test driven her shifting technique. A family member will follow caravan style, driving the couple?s Prius, for safety since cell phone communication may be spotty through mountain passes.
The couple will tweet and post daily along their route, about magical moments as well as mishaps, repairs, and culinary encounters. Anne also is the author of ?Take Charge of Parkinson?s Disease: Dynamic Lifestyle Changes to Put You in the Driver's Seat,? which shares how the couple has learned to live vibrantly with PD since Mike?s diagnosis. The books feature Anne?s original recipes and food preparation techniques that focus on brain healthy nutrition and share valuable messages about maintaining optimal health in the face of neurodegenerative disease through re-focused nutrition, exercise, and healthy emotional coping strategies.
